New Delhi: India Nishad Kumar created history at the World Para Athletics Championships on Friday, defeating American legend Roderick Townsend to clinch the men’s high jump T47 gold medal.
The two-time Paralympic silver medallist leaped 2.14 metres at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, securing his first-ever victory against Townsend. Although Nishad missed out on breaking Townsend world record of 2.16m despite three attempts, the win marked a career-defining moment for the Himachal Pradesh athlete.
A Rivalry Built on Respect
Nishad and Townsend share a long-standing rivalry rooted in respect. The American, a five-time world champion and multiple Paralympic gold medallist, was quick to applaud his Indian competitor after the contest.
“If there is one thing I’ve learned from Roderick, it is to never give up while chasing a mark,” Nishad said after his triumph. “I couldn’t break the world record today, but winning gold in front of my home crowd is special.”
Townsend, who managed a best of 2.03m and finished third behind Turkey Abudullah Ilgaz (2.08m), acknowledged Nishad breakthrough:
“Nishad always keeps me on edge. He deserved this victory, and I believe he has what it takes to break my record.”
Journey of Determination
Nishad rise has been nothing short of inspirational. Having lost his right arm in a childhood accident, he captured silver at the Tokyo Paralympics with a 2.06m effort. In 2021, he began training in the United States under renowned coach Jeremy Fischer, who has mentored several Olympic medallists.
“Earlier, my training was all about pushing myself to the limit,” Nishad recalled. “Jeremy made me focus on strength, technique, and a longer run-up. That changed everything.”
His dedication bore fruit when he touched the 2.14m mark at the 2022 National Games. Now, with his world championship gold, Nishad stands as one of India brightest para-athletes, aiming to shatter world records in the future.
What Next for Nishad?
With Paris 2028 on the horizon, Nishad Kumar is now eyeing the elusive world record of 2.16m. His victory over Townsend in New Delhi has boosted not just his confidence but also India presence on the global para-athletics stage.
